Are you experiencing very dry hair? Or very dry ends? This DIY hot oil treatment mask is for you. It only uses two ingredients so perfect for the wallet and super easy to create.
DIY hair mask ingredients:
- 1/3 cup coconut oil
- 1/3 cup shea butter
The steps:
- Add the coconut oil and shea butter to a heat-safe bowl.
- Microwave another bowl of water until it's almost boiling, then place your bowl of coconut oil and shea butter on top, letting the heat gently melt the two together.
- While the mixture is still warm, rake it through your hair—avoiding the roots, if you have fine, naturally oily hair—and let it sit for 60 minutes (ideally under a shower cap or reuse an old plastic grocery bag).
- Shampoo and condition like normal. If your hair is fine and easily weighed down, try slathering your hair with conditioner first (it can help dissolve the oil better than shampoo), then shampoo and condition again.

Always having hair fly aways and frizz? Try this mask:
Frizz can be caused by damage, the environment or both — and some types of hair are inherently more prone to it. Try this quick tip for sealing your hair cuticles or outer layer with an emollient ingredient like caster oil. This oil acts as a protectant and can help fortify strands, and make your hair look incredibly healthy.
DIY hair mask ingredients:
- Dab of castor oil
The steps:
- Rub a dab of castor oil between your hands.
- Glide a very thin layer over your hair. Make sure you don’t use too much, as this can make your hair appear oily.
- Use a wide tooth comb to work the oil around your hair. This mini mask works well if the oil is evenly distributed.
Do you have an irritated scalp? Try this mask:
Experiencing an irritated scalp is never comfortable, especially if it is accompanied with flakes. We love green tea for many health reason, but also to calm an irritated scalp. This is an anti-inflammatory mask which helps to hydrate and soothe the scalp.
A good guide for this mask is, four tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to eight 30mL of water. You can experiment to find a dilution that works best for you—just know that dry hair needs less apple cider vinegar and oily hair may need more.
DIY hair mask ingredients:
- 1 cup of green tea
- 2 drops of peppermint oil
- 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
The steps:
- Mix mask in a small bowl
- Massage the mask in your scalp and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Use your normal shampoo and conditioner to remove the mask. We recommend rinsing with lukewarm water.
- Use a wide tooth comb to remove any knots, when applying the conditioner. Work your way from the bottom of the strand to your roots, to avoid any excessive pressure on your scalp.
